Periodontology
Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, known as the periodontium.
The periodontium includes: Gums (gingiva), Cementum, Periodontal ligaments, and Alveolar bone.
Periodontology deals with conditions such as gum disease (periodontitis), which can cause inflammation, infection, and eventual tooth loss. It also involves procedures to restore periodontal health, such as gum surgery, scaling and root planing, and placement of dental implants.
